Bronchoscopy

Unlocking the Secrets of Our Lungs
Bronchoscopy
Precise Diagnosis and Treatment with Cutting-Edge Methods
Safe, Quick, and Effective
Imagine your doctor's eyes navigating through the airways of your lungs via a thin and flexible tube, uncovering all their secrets and efficiently combating diseases in their nascent stages.
Bronchoscopy is an endoscopic procedure conducted for both diagnostic and therapeutic reasons, enabling the doctor to peer inside the lung's airways. This method provides visualization of the nasopharynx, larynx, glottis, trachea, and bronchi up to the 4th-5th generation.
Today, bronchoscopy of the 4th-5th generation, along with diagnostic bronchoalveolar lavage aimed at preserving lung health, is exclusively available at the Vardanants Center for Innovative Medicine in Armenia.
Lavage represents a form of liquid biopsy that spares tissue damage, wherein the afflicted lung area is rinsed. This collected material facilitates a detailed examination of the entire cellular composition of lung tissue:
- To refine the diagnosis of lung diseases.
- For early detection of atypical (tumor) cells.
- Wide-spectrum bacteriological examination (incidentally, lavage is regarded as the gold standard worldwide for identifying certain bacteria, such as pneumocystis and legionella).
- Detection of the tuberculosis pathogen, even in cases where standard diagnostic methods have failed to detect the Koch bacterium.
Our medical center provides the following bronchoscopic services:
- Diagnostic bronchoscopy
- Biopsy of central lung and bronchial formations
- Bronchoalveolar lavage
- Examination of the contents of the tracheobronchial tree
- Hemostasis for pulmonary hemorrhage
- Removal of foreign bodies from the respiratory tract
- Administration of endobronchial medications
- Sanitation (cleaning) of the tracheobronchial tree.
Examinations are carried out using the best equipment of the latest generation, including the first-in-Armenia Olympus BF-H1100, under the supervision of a leading specialist.
Bronchoscopy is performed by a specially qualified pulmonologist, Anahit Gevorkyan, who was trained at the Research Institute of Emergency Medicine named after Sklifosovsky in the Russian Federation.
When is bronchoscopy necessary?
If you have:
- chronic cough (lasting more than 8 weeks when the cause cannot be determined)
- central benign and malignant tumors of the bronchi and lungs
- hemoptysis
- pneumonia (ineffectiveness of antibiotics after treatment for more than 3 days)
- recurrent pneumonia
- bronchiectasis
- bronchiolitis
- interstitial lung diseases (including sarcoidosis)
- lung abscess
- localized persistent wheezing
- diseases of the subglottic space
- narrowing of the trachea, tracheomalacia
- burns of the respiratory tract
- unexplained changes (unexplained infiltrates, formations) detected by CT or radiography
- tuberculosis (when there is suspicion but not detected by classical diagnostic methods)
- foreign body in the respiratory tract
- gastroesophageal reflux disease (assessment of bronchial tree aspiration)
Bronchoscopy, including bronchoalveolar lavage, can be performed under either local or general anesthesia.
