Densitometry — Early Detection of Osteoporosis
Densitometry — Early Detection of Osteoporosis
Densitometry is a non-invasive examination that allows assessment of bone tissue density. It helps to:
● determine bone mineral density;
● diagnose osteoporosis;
● monitor the effectiveness of prescribed treatment.
What is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeletal system in which bones lose their density, become more fragile, and the risk of fractures increases significantly.
When is densitometry necessary?
For preventive purposes
The examination is recommended in the presence of the following risk factors:
● women aged 65 years and older;
● men aged 70 years and older;
● early menopause or the postmenopausal period;
● sedentary lifestyle;
● low body weight;
● low levels of calcium and vitamin D;
● hormonal disorders;
● endocrine system diseases;
● diseases of the digestive system;
● rheumatological diseases;
● kidney diseases;
● long-term use of hormonal medications.
For diagnostic purposes
Densitometry is indicated in the presence of:
● persistent pain in the lower back;
● fractures that occurred without obvious trauma;
● a decrease in height of 2–3 cm or more;
● posture disorders or spinal deformity.
How is the examination performed?
● does not require special preparation;
● is painless and safe;
● takes about 20 minutes;
● allows decreased bone tissue density to be detected at early stages.
Contraindications
Densitometry is contraindicated for:
● pregnant women;
● people with metal bone endoprostheses.
To maintain bone health and detect osteoporosis early, it is important to undergo densitometric examination in a timely manner.
