Abdominal Pain: When Should You See a Surgeon?
Abdominal Pain: When Should You See a Surgeon?
“It will go away on its own” is one of the most common thoughts when abdominal pain occurs.
However, not every type of abdominal pain should simply be waited out. It is important to consider not only the intensity of the pain, but also its location, duration, and any accompanying symptoms.
When should you see a surgeon for abdominal pain?
Do not delay seeking medical attention if:
- the pain does not go away;
- it gradually becomes more severe;
- it is concentrated in the lower right side of the abdomen;
- it is accompanied by fever;
- you experience nausea or vomiting;
- your abdomen feels tense or is significantly bloated.
These symptoms may occur with appendicitis, inflammation of the gallbladder, intestinal obstruction, complications of a hernia, and other conditions.
Seeing a surgeon does not necessarily mean having surgery
A surgeon will first assess your condition, identify the possible cause of the abdominal pain, and determine which examinations or treatment may be necessary.
Laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging, including a CT scan, may be recommended to establish an accurate diagnosis. If your abdominal pain persists or becomes more severe, do not postpone seeking medical attention.
At Vardanants Medical Center, you can receive a surgical consultation, undergo the necessary diagnostic examinations, including CT, and, when medically indicated, receive surgical treatment.
