Body mass index (BMI) is a simple measure that helps assess whether a person's weight is appropriate for their height. It may indicate when it is worth paying closer attention to weight and overall health.

BMI is not a diagnosis. It is a screening measure that a doctor considers together with a person's health, age, and other relevant information.

How to calculate BMI

To calculate BMI, you need to know your weight in kilograms and your height in metres.

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m)

For example, if a person weighs 90 kg and is 1.70 m tall:

BMI =90 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 31.1․ In this example, the BMI is 31.1.

What does your result mean?

BMI in adults is generally classified as follows:

  • below 18.5 — underweight;
  • 18.5–24.9 — healthy weight;
  • 25–29.9 — overweight;
  • 30 or above — obesity.

These ranges are intended for adults. Different assessment methods are used for children, adolescents, and pregnant women. BMI may also provide an incomplete picture for people with a high level of muscle mass.

Why is it useful to know your BMI?

A high BMI may be associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnoea, and joint problems. However, BMI alone cannot provide a complete assessment of a person's health.

If your BMI is high, a specialist may recommend additional tests, review your eating habits, and help you choose a safe approach to weight management.

Is your BMI 30 or above?

Changes in diet and physical activity do not always provide lasting results. In some cases, bariatric surgery may be considered as one of the medical treatments for obesity.

Bariatric surgery is not simply a way to lose weight. It is a medical treatment for obesity that, in appropriately selected patients, may support weight loss and improve weight-related health conditions.

According to current international guidelines, bariatric surgery is recommended for consideration in people with a BMI of 35 or above. It may also be considered for people with a BMI of 30–34.9 who have metabolic or weight-related conditions, or when non-surgical methods have not provided lasting results.

BMI alone is not an indication for surgery. The appropriate treatment is determined by a doctor after a consultation and the necessary medical assessments.
